Summary
The Director, Commercial Training & Development will lead the development and implementation of learning and development programs across all Commercial functions in support of key business initiatives. Specifically, the Director will drive the development and deployment of highly effective learning content and curricula in the area of core sales, product/brand knowledge, marketing, and other core Commercial functional skills as required to support achievement of department and company goals and objectives. He/she will also oversee function specific and department wide development initiatives, e.g. cross-functional leadership or management development programs. The Director is also accountable for effectively leading a team of learning & development professionals, and ensuring all learning and development program content is both compliant and in alignment with brand, product and/or program strategies.
The Director, Commercial Training & Development will report to the Sr. Director, Commercial Operations.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and execution of Commercial learning and development strategies, programs and activities that enable achievement of department and company wide brand and product goals.
- Lead the collection and review of internal partner/stakeholder needs, requirements and input; oversee CT&D team in the assessment and application of stakeholder needs to develop and refine programs and activities for maximum impact.
- Accountable for effective development and appropriate utilization of the Commercial training and development budget. Ensure funds are appropriately distributed and invested across all areas of responsibility to enable achievement of department and function specific goals and objectives.
- Accountable for identifying opportunities to leverage external vendor resources to deliver a high quality learning experience. Establish and maintain productive relationships with external resources; ensure alignment between internal and external resources to deliver a seamless experience to learners. Secures the best terms for Seattle Genetics in all vendor negotiations, including scope of work, fees and other related items.
- Oversee deployment of approved learning and development programs and activities by CT&D team. Effectively lead CD&T team across all areas of responsibility by establishing clearly defined roles and responsibilities, including development of specific metrics for successful goal achievement.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure all Commercial learning and development plans, programs and activities align to established product and brand strategies, as well as internal client needs. Oversee CT&D team’s response to changes in strategies and/or objectives to maintain alignment; ensure timely and effective communication between CT&D team and all stakeholders.
- Proactively pursues and maintains continued education and awareness of field, product, disease state(s)/indication(s) and surrounding marketplace changes/developments, and identifies opportunities to incorporate new developments into CD&T plans, programs and activities.
- Hires, develops and retains a team of learning and development professionals with a balance of complementary and diverse skills/knowledge and experience to optimize the team's ability to meet or exceed goals and objectives.
Qualifications:
- 7-10 years of pharmaceutical/biotech sales experience with a minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience in sales training (oncology sales training experience strongly preferred).
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in end-to-end learning process, including learning needs assessment, program design and delivery, and learning evaluation and assessment.
- Strong clinical background.
- Proven ability to understand and interpret customer needs and translate these into a coherent program of work that facilitates achievement of customer goals and objectives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills up, down and across the organization, including executive level presentation skills.
- Proven ability to think strategically and build strategic plans that drive business imperatives across functions, departments and/or the broader organization.
- Sustained track record of delivering results on medium- to large-scale projects of significant complexity.
- Experience leading the design and implementation of “development” initiatives, i.e., training, coaching, learning initiatives.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage constant change with poise and resiliency.
- Capable of effectively leading through ambiguity; ready and willing to change gears and plans quickly, and able to inspire others to do the same.
- Demonstrated experience building relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders quickly and credibly.
- Experience working within a complex, matrixed environment.
Education:
- BS/BA degree in business, communications or related field is required. Advanced degree, MBA or MS, is preferred.
